COEXIST is a broad-based, multidisciplinary project which evaluates competing activities and interactions in European coastal areas.

TITLE: Interaction in European coastal waters: A roadmap to sustainable integration of aquaculture and fisheries
PROGRAMME: FP7, Cooperation, Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology (KBBE)
INSTRUMENT: Collaborative project (small or medium-scale focused research project)
TOTAL BUDGET: €3,777,931
EC CONTRIBUTION: €2,995,500
DURATION: April 2010 – March 2013
COORDINATOR: Institute of Marine Research, Norway
CONSORTIUM: 13 partners from 10 European countries

Europe’s coastal zones are of great socio-economic value. Population densities are high and coastal zones constitute prime space for development of a range of different activities. However, many of Europe’s coastal zones are under pressure to balance competing activities and face potential conflict for space allocation.

The COEXIST project provides a roadmap to better integration, sustainability and synergies across the diverse activities taking place in the European coastal zone. It promotes a harmonised approach for the sustainable use of Europe’s seas and oceans. With the commitment of 13 institutions from 10 European countries, the COEXIST partnership provides ecosystem modelling tools to support decision makers on maritime space management choices.
