Mediterranean Aquaculture Industry Supported through Collaboration


The ethos of the PerformFISH project is closely aligned with the theme of this year’s Aquaculture Europe conference (AE2017), “Cooperation for Growth”. The PerformFISH project, which launched in May 2017, aims to explore and tackle the underlying causes behind the stagnation of the Mediterranean Marine Fish Farming (MMFF) sector.

AE2017, which took place in Croatia, 17-20 October 2017, was one of several recent events and activities which PerformFISH participated in to ensure close cooperation and collaboration with its sister project MedAid as well as with other Mediterranean aquaculture industry actors. A special Industry Forum on Mediterranean Cooperation took place on 20 October to discuss why aquaculture in this region has not progressed significantly in recent years.

The efforts of PerformFISH in this area are complemented by those of MedAID, which will develop innovative tools and integrated marketing and business plans, working towards improving the sector’s image, sustainability and governance. Both projects are responding to a recognised need for cooperation in research to support and facilitate improvements across Mediterranean aquaculture. “More attention needs to be given by both the EU and relevant Member States to the urgent priority of improving technical performance of the Mediterranean fish farming sector, specifically of sea bass and sea bream. The absence of improvement over time is marked. Individual focused projects or a more holistic, integrated programme are required to address this, on both a short and longer-term basis” (FEAP Annual Report 2014).

Other recent efforts include the coordination teams of PerformFISH and MedAID coming together to discuss a joint action plan for interaction and knowledge sharing over the course of both projects. An official confirmation of this collaboration to address key Mediterranean aquaculture bottlenecks was presented by Javier Ojeda of APROMAR, partner in PerformFISH, at the 41st session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean on 18 October 2017 in Montenegro.

Together, the two projects represent a €14 million investment by the EC in Mediterranean aquaculture research, further emphasising Europe’s commitment to support the sustainable development of this important food sector.

AquaTT at Aquaculture Europe 2017

Aquaculture Europe 2017 (AE2017) took place from 17-20 October in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and was attended by over 1,700 sector stakeholders from more than 60 countries. With the theme entitled “Co-operation for Growth”, the conference was organised by the European Aquaculture Society and focused on increasing interactions and networking between different actors involved in European aquaculture. 

TN AE2017The AquaTT stand at the international trade exhibition was very busy as usual. The team promoted its EU-funded projects, which cover a widely diverse range of topics relevant to the European aquaculture sector. AquaTT were also involved in several different workshops and brokerage events at the conference.

This is reflective of increased focus on targeted Knowledge Transfer activities within funded research to ensure more successful uptake of research results, something which AquaTT strongly promotes in all its projects. As AquaTT’s experience and expertise is strongly rooted in knowledge management, AE2017 was an interesting and inspiring opportunity to meet with partners, new and old.

As in previous years, AquaTT co-organised (together with Aqualex Multimedia Consortium (AMC) Ltd) the Lindsay Laird Award for Innovation in Aquaculture, rewarding the best student poster at the conference. Francisco Guardiola, of the University of Porto and University of Murcia, received a certificate, a new iPad Mini and several book prizes for his poster titled “Generation of a brain-derived cell line from Fundulus heteroclitus and its use for antiviral immunity studies”.

The COLUMBUS project is pleased to announce that the final COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer conference will be held in Brussels on 24 January 2018. Representing the European Commission’s most substantial investment in Knowledge Transfer to date, COLUMBUS intends to capitalise on the EC’s much larger expenditure on marine and maritime research by ensuring accessibility and uptake of research Knowledge Outputs by end users, policy, industry, science and wider society.

Partners, collaborators and interested parties are invited to join to discover and celebrate the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer methodology and its activities. This event, titled “Making Marine and Maritime Science Count”, will highlight Knowledge Transfer case studies and lessons learned through the work performed by the COLUMBUS project. The COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer handbook will be launched, along with recommendations for European and national funding agencies to embed Knowledge Transfer systems in current and future funding mechanisms.

External capacity training on “Creating Impact by Knowledge Transfer for Scientists” focusing on the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer methodology will take place on 23 January 2018. Registration for the training course will take place through the project website over the coming months. The winners of the COLUMBUS Blue Society award for impactful Knowledge Transfer will also be announced during the conference. Details on the nomination process will be announced on the COLUMBUS website shortly.

This event builds on the successful work from the two previous COLUMBUS annual conferences. Participants at the first conference in 2016, “Realising the Impact of Marine and Maritime Research through Knowledge Transfer”, looked at the increasingly important areas of defining impact from EU funded research and how to achieve it through Knowledge Transfer. In 2017 the second conference, “Achieving Impact from Marine Research”, provided a forum to collaboratively explore the barriers, challenges and possible solutions to achieving the impact potential of marine and maritime research at all stages of the funding cycle.

Aquaculture Knowledge Transfer - Facilitating the Pathway from Research Outputs to Industry Products

The ongoing Horizon 2020 initiative COLUMBUS ( is pioneering a new technique to better understand how to optimise the use of knowledge derived from research. Through the COLUMBUS project’s process of identification of Knowledge Outputs (KOs), and the development of Knowledge Transfer plans to facilitate the increase of Technology Readiness Level (TRL) to bring this knowledge to market, COLUMBUS partners organised a special event at European Aquaculture Society’s Aquaculture Europe 2017 (AE2017) conference on 18 October 2017, Dubrovnik, to present several aquaculture case studies that are currently going through the process.

Case studies were presented which consisted of innovative knowledge being effectively transferred and applied with measurable impact. These presentations were broad and varied, examples include:

• A sensor whose technology originated from the oceanographic sector, where it was used to measure ice-melt but was now finding new applications in waste water, drinking water and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).

• An app, called Fish Shape, whose unique selling point lies in the opportunity to pick up the onset of juvenile fish malformations before they become visible.

Following the presentations, an open forum was held and moderated by COLUMBUS partner and owner of AQUARK, Panos Christofilogiannis. As well as identifying end-users and ‘knowledge amplifiers’ for the knowledge that was presented, and discussing important related subjects such as intellectual property, the attendees also brainstormed on new ideas and projects.

In total, the half-day workshop attracted around 60 participants from ten countries, representing a fair cross-section of the stakeholder participation of AE2017.

In addition, COLUMBUS partners and Knowledge Transfer experts were also present at the COLUMBUS Brokerage Stand during the rest of the conference to allow interested parties to set up individual meetings to review their project and its potential. For those wishing to go further, this would be the start of a process towards impact, and a relationship with COLUMBUS, that could include: mentorship in the protection of intellectual property; development of a business plan; identification of end-users and development partners; and, assessment of appropriate channels to market.

Knowledge Transfer in Maritime Sensing Technologies

On 23 November 2017, The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), lead the organisation of a COLUMBUS Brokerage Event, in collaboration with fellow COLUMBUS partners, Seascape Consultants, EuroGOOS, and Aquatera, as well as the related initiative, EMODnet. The event took place during the AtlantOS General Assembly in Gran Canaria, Spain. The goal of this event was to facilitate brokerage and foster partnerships between two stakeholder groups: representatives of national marine observations and data programmes, based in Europe and from across the Atlantic; and, sensor developers who have generated new technologies through their participation in EU-funded projects.

New technologies and innovations in sensor development funded through the EU framework programmes were presented and discussed to aid knowledge transfer and foster collaboration among these marine and maritime stakeholders.

The participants, including publicly-funded organisations and SMEs, comprised of:

• European companies that are focused on maritime sensing technologies and/or observing platforms and have recently participated in the development of new sensors with the support of the European Commission-funded research and innovation projects;

• Companies and institutions with expertise in marine sensor interoperability, data collection and transmission, and data sharing and use, who have developed innovative cutting-edge solutions, mostly with the support of the European Commission, in the framework of research and innovation projects;

• Potential users of these innovations amongst the AtlantOS partnership, together representing the European oceanographic observation and monitoring community.

Through its brokerage events and other initiatives, the Horizon 2020 COLUMBUS project ( aims to ensure that applicable knowledge generated through EU-funded projects is transferred effectively to marine and maritime sectors. The intention of this effective transfer is to capitalise on the European Commission’s investment in research and contribute to sustainable Blue Growth.

The event proved to be a significant success, and raised awareness of selected sensor technologies and innovations to end-users. The knowledge generated will now be applied by new actors in both new ways and new sectors, thus achieving measurable impact and value.

COLUMBUS 2nd Annual Conference a Roaring Success - Achieving Impact from Marine Research

On 7 November 2017, over 50 participants converged in Brussels, Belgium, for the European Commission (EC) Horizon 2020 funded COLUMBUS project’s second Annual Blue Society Knowledge Transfer Conference. The second COLUMBUS conference titled “Achieving Impact from Marine Research” provided the forum to collaboratively explore the barriers, challenges and possible solutions to achieving the impact potential of marine and maritime research, at all stages of the funding cycle.

The conference was opened by David Murphy of AquaTT, COLUMBUS Strategic and Operational Lead, who emphasised “The need for action is now. We need to stand together as a community and work towards a future where high-quality research is more effectively transferred for measurable impact and the benefits are seen on the ground by society at large”.

The day commenced with the presentation of relevant knowledge generated by the COLUMBUS project, as well as examples of impact achieved from successful Knowledge Transfer activities performed by other initiatives, organisations and projects. This celebration of impactful Knowledge Transfer set the scene for the afternoon session where keynote speeches from representatives of industry, academia and policy informed a lively panel discussion with provocative topics being covered; such as

• Whose responsibility is it to carry out Knowledge Transfer?

• How can funding mechanisms be improved to incorporate Knowledge Transfer mechanisms?

• What are the barriers to effective Knowledge Transfer and are they evolving?

The intense enthusiasm that resulted from these discussions only highlighted further the need for training and consultation in Knowledge Transfer to become more abundant. The participants strongly agreed on the benefits of brainstorming and debating with other attendees. The overarching consensus was that roles and responsibilities need to be clarified, as well as the terminology surrounding the topic. COLUMBUS will continue to involve all interested stakeholders as it defines recommendations and guidelines for how Knowledge Transfer could be incorporated into funded research as a key legacy output of the project, which will be presented at the final COLUMBUS conference.

On either side of the conference, COLUMBUS ran a number of other important events. On 6 November 2017, External Capacity Building Training, entitled “Creating impact by knowledge transfer to support funding agencies”, was provided to eleven participants and covered an introduction to the robust and validated COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer Methodology, as well as considerations for funding agencies to support an increase of impact from funded research projects.

In parallel, the COLUMBUS External Advisory Board met to discuss the progress of the project and to provide strategic advice on how the project’s legacy could be maximised. Finally, on 8 November 2017, COLUMBUS partners met for their 6th Partner Meeting. The meeting focused on planning for the remaining months of the project which will include the final COLUMBUS Annual Blue Society Knowledge Transfer Conference in January 2018.

The “Making Marine and Maritime Science Count” conference will provide an opportunity to discover and celebrate the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer methodology and its activities. This conference will be held in Brussels on the 24 January 2018, and will bring together partners, collaborators and interested parties to highlight Knowledge Transfer case studies and lessons learned through the work performed by the COLUMBUS project.

EuroMarine Call for Proposals Outcome – 11 Innovative Scientific Activities Funded for 2018

Eleven activities have been awarded funding for 2018 under the EuroMarine 2017 Call for Proposals. These foresight workshops and working groups will bring teams together to share, collaborate and collectively push boundaries within marine science. Support for these activities and their outcomes aims to leverage larger projects.


Since its inception, EuroMarine has contributed over €490,000 in funding to 63 bottom-up ideas. More than 1,600 scientists, including early career researchers, have participated in foresight workshops, working groups, capacity building exercises, training courses and more since the networks inception in 2014. A successful Individual Fellowship Programme for early career researchers was also launched in 2017. With its holistic and interdisciplinary approach to marine science, the network’s newly funded proposals cover a wide range of topics and areas related to the marine sector:

• Anticipating Potential Pathways and Routes for Innovation towards Desirable Socio-Economic Impacts (Focus on Macro Algae)

• Autonomous Systems for Integrated Marine and Maritime Observations in Coastal areas

• Ecosystem Changes Associated with Offshore Wind Farms: Bridging the Gap between Biogeochemical Effects and its Repercussions for Ecosystem Functioning and Services

• EuroMarine Research Infrastructure Working Group

• Improving the Visibility of Ocean Data from New Technologies: A Case Study of High Frequency Flow Cytometry

• Insights into Near-future Changes in Arctic Sea-ice Biogeochemistry and Associated Ecosystems

• Marine Holobionts - Concepts and Challenges

• Modelling Ocean Plastic Litter in a Changing Climate: Challenges and Mitigations

• Predicting the Future of the Ocean from Signatures of the Past: Using Marine Sediment Archives to Understand Adaptation of Marine Plankton to a Changing Environment

• The Marine Animal Forests of the World: Challenges, Frontiers and the Role of Science in its Management and Conservation

• Trait-based Approach to Seagrass Ecosystems

First EuroMarine Individual Fellowship Programme Comes to a Successful Close

The first EuroMarine Individual Fellowship Programme has come to a close. Launched in 2017, the Programme proved to be a resounding success, with 23 PhD and Postdoc students receiving funding to attend a training course of their choice.

The training courses were relevant to specific research areas, fundamental to the work of the early career scientists by providing basic tools, a deeper understanding in specific areas, or learning new skills methods and concepts. These courses will prove to be hugely beneficial to the participants in the future, with the feedback received by participants being overwhelmingly positive.

Besides the enriched knowledge they accumulated, the student’s interactions with senior scientists, alongside exchanges with scientists from other nationalities, will help them create a good basis for further research and collaborations, “this call is a major assistance for PhDs and early Post Docs and launching it again will tremendously help them advance their careers.”


The majority of topics covered during the training courses included marine ecology (57%), marine biodiversity (52%) and marine biology (47%). Many of the courses involved the transfer of skills related to modelling (44%) and data (38%).

AQUAEXCEL2020: Making Science Count for Sustainable Aquaculture


The first AQUAEXCEL2020 industry brokerage event “FROM RESEARCH INNOVATION TO INDUSTRY APPLICATION” brought together researchers and aquaculture industry representatives during the Aquaculture Europe 2017 conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on 19 October 2017. This forum for engagement and exchange was hosted by the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (EATiP) and AquaTT, both partners in AQUAEXCEL2020, an EU-funded Research Infrastructure project focusing on excellence in European fish research.

AQUAEXCEL2020 project coordinator, Dr Marc Vandeputte (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique INRA, France), reflected on the event which was “a fantastic opportunity to discuss some of the important research achievements of the project as well as its precursor, the EU FP7-funded AQUAEXCEL project, and share those knowledge outputs with their end-users, the aquaculture industry stakeholders. Assuring effective and constructive contact between research and industry is a key component of AQUAEXCEL2020, to facilitate real uptake of the research innovations by the aquaculture industry”.

Central to the brokerage event were pitches of three knowledge outputs of high potential for the European aquaculture industry. The outputs were previously selected by the AQUAEXCEL2020 Industry and Research Advisory Panel (IRAP) which comprises high-level professionals from the aquaculture industry and research sectors. These outputs resulted from projects conducted within the AQUAEXCEL2020 Transnational Access (TNA) programme so far. The TNA programme funds access to 39 aquaculture research facilities across Europe, offering researchers the possibility to undertake experimental trials on commercially important aquaculture fish species and system types.

Dr Laura Gasco (University of Turin, Italy) presented her research findings and industry solutions for substituting juvenile sea bass diets with insect mealworms to reduce the need for costly, volatile and unsustainable fish meal and oil. Dr Jaume Pérez-Sánchez (Institute of Aquaculture Torre de la Sal (IATS-CSIC), Spain) introduced a novel, comprehensive toolset that helps with the understanding and assessment of potential benefits of adding feed additives to plant-based diets for aquaculture fish. Both innovations could eventually support a more sustainable and competitive aquaculture sector.

Dr Petr Císař (University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic) showcased “3DFISH”, an innovative infrared reflection system for use as a suitable real-time 3D fish monitoring and measuring technique. 3DFISH enables non-invasive monitoring of fish behaviour and welfare indicators in real-time which allows for an efficient and cost-effective detection of behavioural abnormalities. Its users can, for example, detect potential problems in aquaculture facilities such as poor water quality and early disease signs earlier than in conventional systems, which will help reduce financial losses.

In addition to these high potential knowledge outputs, research and innovation leaders within AQUAEXCEL2020 presented their newest findings together with some tasters of further expected outputs. In the next three years research will continue on, amongst others, fishlines, virtual laboratories, and experimental fish management. The project also offers services such as new training courses based on the latest results and the online European aquaculture facility directory.

It is imperative that aquaculture research considers the actual and future needs of the industry and Mr Kjell Maroni of the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund (Norway) presented some perspectives from the industry. Mr Maroni, an AQUAEXCEL2020 IRAP industry expert and previous President of the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) said that “this is a very participative concept and it is the place where not only researchers can pitch their ideas to industry, but industry people can in return present their knowledge and technology needs”.

The closing industry panel, moderated by Mr Courtney Hough (EATiP) and chaired by Mr Kjell Maroni and Dr Marc Vandeputte, discussed some of those needs, including the need for technological improvements, vaccines and genetics for better biological production, societal acceptance of aquaculture to allow for sustainable growth, better communication of research based results, and the promotion of “aquaculture open days” throughout Europe.

Supporting research innovation to industry application is key to AQUAEXCEL2020, and involves maintaining active communication, engagement and exchange of ideas between researchers and aquaculture industry stakeholders. A number of similar industry brokerage events will be held in the next three years, presenting more high-potential industry-relevant outputs.

Prestigious European Marine Biological Stations Share Resources for Advanced Research Capacity in ‘ASSEMBLE Plus’

Over 50 participants representing 32 organisations and 14 countries converged in Paris, France, from 19 - 20 October 2017, for the kick-off meeting of the ASSEMBLE Plus project. A Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Action, the project represents the second phase of the European Union’s FP7 research infrastructure initiative, ASSEMBLE.

Under the leadership of the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC-ERIC;, ASSEMBLE Plus will activate important research resources and provide scientists from academia, industry and policy with a quality-assured programme of access to the marine biology and ecology research infrastructure. This programme includes direct access and virtual access to marine biological stations offering: a wide variety of marine ecosystems; unique marine biological resources; state-of-the-art experimental and analytical facilities with integrated workflows; historical observation data; and, advanced training opportunities.

In addition to the above access mechanisms, Joint Research Activities involving all partners will aim to develop innovative research technologies and/or methodologies. Furthermore, a coherent series of Networking Activities will strengthen the culture of cooperation within and beyond the consortium partnership, providing a benchmark for practices of service provision, disseminating interoperable protocols, engaging with novel user communities, and sharing insights into sustainable business strategies.

The sum of the actions envisaged in ASSEMBLE Plus will increase the number of users of marine biological stations and shape their business strategy perspective, ultimately improving their long-term sustainability perspectives.

The kick-off meeting allowed the partners to better understand these significant objectives at a micro and macro level, and how they can contribute to each task. Work package leaders hosted working groups to plan for and initiate the project’s activities, discuss the access operating systems, and, design the external communications and dissemination strategy. The meeting was a success, with the partnership eager to begin work immediately.

EURASTiP Exchange Programme Launched

The EURASTiP project has recently launched its Exchange Programme. The programme is open to individuals involved in industry, researchers and educators from both Europe and Asia. The value of the Programme is up to €3,000 for successful applicants.

The EURASTiP project is a Horizon 2020-funded project, which began in January 2017. The project aims to create and support three National Pilot multi-stakeholder Platforms (NPPs) in major aquaculture producing countries (Thailand, Vietnam and Bangladesh) and develop road-map models for others in the region, providing the foundation for an international multi-stakeholder platform (MSP).

SEAFOODTOMORROW project: Innovative Solutions for Nutritious, Safe and Sustainable Seafood in Europe


SEAFOODTOMORROW is a new, €7m European Union Horizon 2020-funded project that aims to develop innovative sustainable solutions for improving the safety and dietary properties of seafood in Europe. Addressing the challenge to meet the growing market need for safe and sustainable seafood, the project will generate new knowledge to develop commercial solutions for improving the socio-economic and environmental sustainability of the European seafood production and processing industry.

It is projected that by 2050, population and economic growth will result in a doubling of demand for food globally. One of the main challenges this century is ensuring food production and consumption is socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Seafood is one of the most important food commodities consumed in Europe as it is an important source of animal protein and is naturally rich with valuable nutrients for a healthy diet. It is therefore vital to develop new, environmentally friendly and transparent seafood production and processing methods that will underpin seafood security in-line with market demands.

The three-year SEAFOODTOMORROW project brings together 35 partners from across Europe with the most up-to-date technological development and market-oriented expertise to meet these challenges. The project was recently launched at the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) headquarters in Lisbon (Portugal), with all partners meeting for the kick-off event from 21-23 November 2017. Project co-ordinator, António Marques IPMA, said: "The SEAFOODTOMORROW kick-off meeting gathered the key players from all partner institutions for the first time. The intense discussions and unanimous decisions made at the meeting are clear evidence of the proactivity of the consortium. All partners are driven towards a common ambitious goal: ensuring the success of validated, eco-innovative, sustainable solutions that improve safety and dietary properties of seafood, to be developed in the project. Now it is time to move forward and keep this collaborative and proactive spirit alive."

Using this comprehensive approach, SEAFOODTOMORROW offers a strong and transdisciplinary partnership that is addressing food security challenges by finding innovative solutions for seafood and associated environmental issues. The kick-off meeting was an overall success, with the partnership keen to build on the firm foundations set in Lisbon.

Post-Doctoral Researcher – H2020 ATLAS and SFI MaREI-Obs

Postdoctoral position in Anti-inflammatory Evaluation and Lipid Characterisation of Marine Bioactive Compounds

The Post Doc position is part of a larger European project -BlueShell- which will explore the potential of shellfish shells for extraction of potential bioactive compounds following an enzymatic hydrolysis treatment. This particular position will address the analysis of anti-inflammatory properties of hydrolysates and its fractions as well as the characterisation of lipids in the shellfish shell hydrolysates.

EMBRIC funding call for training organisers in marine biotechnology and aquaculture innovation, open now!

The European Marine Biological Research Infrastructure Cluster (EMBRIC) launches its 3rd funding call for training organisers to provide organising parties an extra incentive and financial support to organise, host and participate in knowledge exchange, best practice and technology transfer in marine biotechnology innovation. 

Do you wish to contribute to the blue bio-economy domain? Do you prefer concise proposal submissions? Do you have know-how, but no initiating capital for such initiatives?

MyGAA Launches Map of University-Level Aquaculture Programming for Schools in North America

MyGAA ( has recently launched an online map of University-level aquaculture programming for schools in North America. The map is the first steps in an aim of mapping these schools on a worldwide scale. MyGAA are hoping that it becomes a reliable resource for students to decide where to receive their education.

European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2018

The European Geosciences Union’s (EGU) Assembly will take place from 8-13 April 2018 in Vienna, Austria. The event will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists, especially early career researchers, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience.

The Ocean in a +2°C world - An analytical perspective 

Due to the rapidly increasing number of challenges global warming is producing, most countries have agreed to make a conscious effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to keep the global average atmospheric temperature from increasing by 2⁰C.

This symposium aims to cover quite a large number of themes and areas. Chief amongst these is the potential evolution of the ocean in a warming climate. The symposium is free of charge and open to all, but registration is necessary.
